This poem, from the June 15, 1863, edition of The Sabbath Recorder, is a tribute to the memory of F. Erwin Clarke of the 146th New York Volunteers. Private Clarke, who died at Falmouth, Virginia, was a victim not of bullets but of disease, which claimed far more soldiers than the rigors of combat.
Thanks to Joel Craig of Joel Craig's Bivouac for contributing this poem.
