One of the best-loved of all Confederate songs, this poem was written by Marie
Ravenal de la Coste, the daughter of French parents who had emigrated to
Savannnah, Georgia. Marie taught French but was inspired to try her hand at
poetry when her fiance, a captain in the Confederate Army, was killed in combat.
After his death, Marie made a practice of visiting wounded soldiers in
Savannah's hospitals, bringing them flowers and fruit and keeping them company.
She composed these moving verses about the loss of a loved one in battle after
seeing an unidentified young soldier with a fatal wound brought into the ward
where she was visiting.
